Austin Walker ’12 has been awarded a Fulbright Grant to Kenya. He will spend the 2012-13 academic year working on his project “Kenyan Youth Development: Youth as Kenya’s Development Architects” in Nyanza Province of western Kenya. Walker will rejoin the Lwala Community Alliance staff and director Robert Kasabala to build upon the baseline study about youth perspectives on development that they conducted last summer.

Hamilton College archaeologists were well-represented on the program of the 77th Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology held April 18-22 in Memphis, Tenn. Several students, faculty members and alumni presented research with other Hamilton alumni in attendance.

As the 2011-12 academic year comes to a close, seniors are busy preparing their final projects and theses for presentation to the community. As is the tradition at Hamilton, for the next week every department will showcase the work of its concentrators in late afternoon and evening presentations that are open to the public.

Twenty Hamilton students have been named recipients of the 2012 Emerson Summer Grants. The students receive a stipend and spend the summer working collaboratively with a Hamilton faculty member, researching an area of interest.

Philip Maier ’12 co-authored a paper in the June, 2012, issue of the journal Civil Wars, published through the University of Birmingham. The forthcoming journal is a special issue – “Assessing the Capabilities of Regional and International Organizations in Civil Wars” – that examines the ability of various organizations to deal with internal conflicts, such as the African Union in Burundi and NATO in Afghanistan.

Professor of Biology Ernest Williams took six students to the Northeast Natural History Conference 2012, held April 16-18 at the OnCenter in Syracuse, N.Y., where he and the students all made presentations.

Denise Ghartey ’12 has been awarded Hamilton’s Bristol Fellowship. The Bristol Fellowship was begun in 1996 as part of a gift to the college by William M. Bristol Jr., (Class of 1917). The $22,000 fellowship is designed to encourage Hamilton students to experience the richness of the world by living outside the United States for one year and studying an area of great personal interest.

Elly Field '13 presented a paper with Professor George Hobor of Colgate University at the annual conference of the Southern Sociological Society in New Orleans on March 22. The paper was co-authored with sociology students Amy Dow '12 and David Schwartz '13 and details the results of the group's summer research on the social and economic integration of Utica's Karen and Bantu refugee population.
